All Lexus models might have a yoke one day, and that's … actually okay?

as a no-cost option and even a $700 retrofit for customers yoked to the unconventional steering setup. So why are yokes taking hold at Lexus?electric crossover as the Japanese luxury brand glomming onto a trend that's on the way out. Lexus thinks otherwise. It sees potential in such a steering system, going so far as to say yokes will become a core, fundamental feature in its future vehicles.

. The brand describes how, in a fully self-driving, Level 5-capable vehicle, the yoke might fold away into the dashboard, providing occupants with more interior space. This is possible thanks to the elimination of conventional, inflexible steering hardware; and by including less wheel in the first place, there's less to physically fold away. In this way, software enables tangible physical improvements.

On the subject of hardware, Lexus also appreciates how Steer by Wire could reduce its engineering and manufacturing costs. The software connection lessens the need to create specific parts for left- and right-hand-drive markets. For example, instead of having two different bulkheads with a hole for a steering shaft to pass through on a particular side, there could now be a single component for global production. Other steering-related pieces are able to be packaged more flexibly.
