Star Wars confirms that before the events of Return of the Jedi, Lando Calrissian had the chance to free Han Solo from his carbonite prison.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Summary The latest issue of Marvel Comics' flagship Star Wars series confirms Han Solo could have easily been saved from his carbonite prison before Return of the Jedi. As seen in The Empire Strikes Back, Han Solo was frozen in a block of carbonite by the Empire and given to Boba Fett, allowing the bounty hunter to deliver the infamous smuggler to Jabba the Hutt.
As seen in Star Wars #39 from Charles Soule and Madibek Musabekov, Lando is trying to help his cyborg friend Lobot who's been corrupted by the sentient droid virus known as the Scourge, the issue serving as a tie-in to the Dark Droids crossover event set between Episodes V and VI. Needing an ancient droid Calrissian recently sold to Jabba the Hutt, the con man and former Cloud City baron secretly infiltrates Jabba's palace in this new issue to recover said droid.
This isn't the first time the Rebels had a chance to save Han before Return of the Jedi. Immediately following the events of Empire Strikes Back, the War of the Bounty Hunters event saw Boba Fett losing Han Solo while en route to Jabba's Palace thanks to the efforts of Crimson Dawn. While Leia got very close during a major conflict between the Empire and the Hutts, Fett eventually regained his prize for Jabba.
Why Lando Couldn't Save Han Solo Before Return of the Jedi While Lobot initially starts the process of freeing Solo from the carbonite in this issue, Lando stops him. Not only were Jabba and his soldiers on their way back from the Dune Sea, but the palace was being overrun with possessed droids thanks to the Scourge. As such, Lando believed freeing Han at that moment would have been too risky as he'd be weak and blind .
While Lando wasn't wrong about the risk, it does seem as though it might have been one worth taking all things considered. One can imagine Calrissian's guilt for betraying Solo in Empire Strikes Back would have motivated him to roll the dice, wanting to redeem himself and save his friend.
