The death toll from the Haiti earthquake has risen to 1,941 people, authorities said, with nearly 10,000 people injured
, heavy rains and powerful winds hit Haiti early Tuesday, raising the risk of floods and mudslides and hampering relief efforts for quake victims.
“The situation is very serious in Les Cayes,” said Robert Leger, a retired surgeon. “Especially in the small villages and hamlets outside of the city.” Aid workers on Tuesday assessed the damage from the storm while trying to find more survivors from the Saturday quake. “We are in the fog of disaster hearing conflicting reports,” said Conor Shapiro, the chief executive of St. Boniface Hospital, a regional rural hospital about 65 miles east of Les Cayes.
