Haiti earthquake: What we know following Saturday's magnitude 7.2 quake

As of late Sunday, the death toll from the disaster had risen to 1,297, most in the departments of Sud, Nippes, and Grand’Anse, which occupy the western portion of the southern peninsula. At least 5,700 people were injured, and hundreds more are still missing, leading to fears that the death toll could rise substantially.
More than 13,000 homes and other buildings including hospitals, schools and churches were destroyed or damaged. The port city of Les Cayes, which has a population of about 125,000, was among the hardest hit, and hospitals there were overwhelmed by the number of injured. The U.S. Agency for International Development said it sent a 65-member search-and-rescue team, along with specialized equipment, to join its disaster response team already in Haiti.
