Pep Guardiola explains why he uses inside full-backs and how he adapted his tactics to incorporate Erling Haaland into Manchester City's system.
In February, City head coach Pep Guardiola explained to Sky Sports why he uses inside full-backs. “Firstly, because of the quality of the players. Secondly, because I like to play with wingers high and wide. Thirdly, because I am a big fan of the short passes so if you have more players from behind that you can bring into the middle I think you play better.
”It was City’s adaptation to Erling Haaland, a goalscoring No 9 who plays off the shoulder of the opposition defence, scores bucketloads but brings more chaos than control.Incorporating Haaland meant City moved away from the false-nine system and lost a midfielder, so moved a defender in to compensate and sustain control. Their direct speed, , has consistently declined since Guardiola’s arrival in 2016, as they seek to defend with the ball.
