Manchester City cruised to a derby day success at Old Trafford on an afternoon when Erling Haaland showed he is the best forward in the Premier League.
Apparently, Erling Haaland hasn't been in great form this season. It's indisputable that the Norwegian has missed some excellent chances for Manchester City, but he picked the perfect moment to remind the rest of the Premier League that his goals could yet be the difference again.
When City put together a slick move early in the second half, the same player stood up the same back-post cross. This time there was nobody near Haaland who had a simple task to head the ball beyond the goalkeeper. It's stretching it to say that there's any real comparison between the two, but it has been mentioned in some quarters and maybe acted as the perfect motivation for Haaland to assert his authority. It shouldn't come as a surprise any more, but Bernardo's ability to consistently leave his mark on the biggest games is remarkable. Whatever position he plays, the Portuguese is City's beating heart on the biggest days.
City didn't have too many scares in the first half but most of them were self-inflicted. Josko Gvardiol twice gave the ball away under pressure in the first 15 minutes to spark United breaks, one of which Scott McTominay should have made much more of. Foden eventually glanced across and responded similarly, but Guardiola's body language made it clear he had not been happy with the decision to try such an optimistic ball and give possession back to United.Since City had last been awarded a penalty in a derby United had had seven. It was 13 years since the Blues' last derby day spot-kick and more than 30 years since they had one at Old Trafford, in April 1992.
