How then is Thunberg able to endure? What makes this 16-year-old different? Well, her tweet below suggests some reasons: Take a look at how the NINDS website describes AS: “the most distinguishing symptom of AS is a child’s obsessive interest in a single object or topic to the exclusion of any other. Children with AS want to know everything about their topic of interest and their conversations with others will be about little else. Their expertise, high level of vocabulary, and formal speech patterns make them seem like little professors.
How about then the observation that those with AS often struggle socially and become outsiders? Yes, the singular focus on certain interests and the so-called eccentric behavior and language patterns can make it difficult to fit in with others. Those with AS may not master certain motor skills such as pedaling bikes and catching balls as soon as most kids, which can further impede their social integration. They also may struggle with reading others’ non-verbal cues.
