with the United Nations against five countries that are not on track to meet the emissions goals they agreed to in the 2015 Paris Agreement.The young people, ranging in age from 8 to 17, claimed the countries have not done enough"to prevent the deadly and foreseeable consequences" of climate change. They also alleged that children’s rights are being violated per a 1989 UN agreement.
Thunberg and her fellow activists are not seeking monetary compensation, but want the countries to immediately work on meeting stricter climate goals. The UN’s Committee on the Rights of the Child will handle the complaint and decide if it can move forward. The committee’s suggestions, however, are not legally binding.“You have stolen my dreams, my childhood with your empty words. We will not let you get away with this. Right here, right now is where we draw the line,” said Thunberg in a speech to the General Assembly.
