Craig said Wednesday that he expects to face federal charges in the coming days in relationship to legal work he did for the Ukrainian government in 2012.

Craig talks with then-Attorney General Eric Holder as they leave a White House conference in 2009. He would be the first prominent Democratic figure to be charged as a result of a foreign lobbying investigation spun out of special counsel Robert S. Mueller III’s probe into Russia interference in the 2016 presidential campaign.

But human rights advocates alleged the report had been engineered by Yanukovych’s government and whitewashed the jailing of his political opponent. In response, a Justice Department official sent Craig a letter in January 2014 indicating that the government agency found the firm had “no present obligation to register under FARA.”
