Therese Coffey, the Environment Secretary, told officials in her department to cancel any planned and future meetings with the charity after five activists climbed onto the roof of the Prime Minister’s Grade II listed manor house in North Yorkshire on Thursday morning., accused the government of failing to “engage with the world around them”, adding: “The planet is on fire and Rishi Sunak is acting like nothing’s happening.
In response to a wave of criticism from ministers and MPs, Greenpeace said they would not have carried out the protest if the PM or anyone from his family were at home. The environmental group said that they knocked on the door of the house and announced their presence, declaring “this is a peaceful protest” before climbing onto the roof and unfurling a black banner that read “Rishi Sunak – Oil profits or our Future?” in protest at Mr Sunak’s decision to “max out” the UK’s oil and gas reserves in the North Sea.
It took police two hours to turn up at the property in Kirby Sigston, North Yorkshire.
