The O55 basketball tournament took place in Malaga recently and saw the team lose in the quarter final to LatviaTHE GB O55 women’s team made history as the first GB O55 women’s team to compete at the Federation of International Masters Basketball Association’s European Masters.
Sadly no, we aren’t there yet, but I am seeing more women’s sport being recognised on the mainstream stages. It’s great to see British women dominating in their sport and getting the recognition they deserve. If there’s no advertising in women’s sport then it won’t get televised, so it’s a vicious circle. It’s only recent years where we are seeing more women’s football and rugby being televised at peak times, but it means there is hope for us too.
I was fortunate to have been able to play basketball for the Met Police, England, and GB Police. I had the support of the Met Police to continue playing all the way through my career. I would say being patient, remaining committed and working hard even when things are challenging and don’t seem to be going your way, are the main similarities.
I played netball until my late teens and when I joined the police at the age of 26, I started playing basketball again.
