One senior Tory figure in the North West said the cancellation of the Manchester leg of HS2 could 'add to the misery at the ballot box' at the next general election
, adding that a decision on the future of the Manchester section would be taken “in due course”.
Mr Kent, who will be campaigning for Wrexham’s Tory MP Sarah Atherton to retain her seat at the next election, added: “If it is cancelled, then I think it’d be something that would be used against us at the general election. “We also need to be mindful of whether we are serious about levelling up, and levelling up needs investment.”
“I don’t believe the cancellation of HS2 would, on its own, be a huge electoral problem for us, but combined with everything else people are right to complain about then it certainly won’t help use retain those Red Wall seats in the region that we won in 2019.”
