Governmental records show that less than 40 per cent of freedom of information (FOI) requests logged in 2022 were granted in full
Since the end of 2015 more than half of government departments’ FOI responses have been partially or fully withheld.
Duncan Hames, director of policy at Transparency International UK, said: “Again last year, information requests of public bodies were more or less as likely to be refused as to be granted in full. “Whatever their operational differences, all government departments should aim to offer high levels of transparency and accountability to the public.”
In 2022, half of government departments have response rates considered “unsatisfactory” by the Information Commissioner’s Office . An unsatisfactory rating is given to any government body or department which responds to fewer than 90 per cent of requests within 20 working days.Sachin Savur, research assistant with the Institute for Government, said: “In recent years we’ve seen government departments and other public bodies get worse at responding to requests in a timely manner.
