Gov. Greg Abbott said he’s won promises from Mexican officials to step up border...

PHARR, TX - APRIL 13: A Texas Department of Public Safety trooper directs commercial trucks near the Pharr-Reynosa International bridge on April 13, 2022.Gov. Greg Abbott has ended his aggressive truck inspection program at all Texas border checkpoints following days of withering bipartisan criticism and a scathing condemnation from the nation’s largest trade organization for truckers.

Abbott’s program caused truckers who typically cross the border in less than 30 minutes to wait up to 8 hours to get into Texas. That has been slashing income for truckers who are paid by the load and reduced the flow of goods and supply into the United States, further adding to supply chain disruptions.

Abbott announced the latest deal late Friday afternoon with Tamaulipas Governor Francisco Javier García Cabeza de Vaca. Tamaulipas shares a border with Texas that stretches from Brownsville to Laredo and is a major port of entry for Mexican produce and other agriculture. “I understand the concern that businesses have about trying to move products across the bridge, but I also know the anger Texans face and have that’s caused by Joe Biden not securing the border,” Abbott, a Republican, said Friday.
