The actions of students who died tackling gunmen at two separate U.S. campuses a week apart have been hailed as heroic. A majority of school districts have now embraced such an approach, with experts saying educators need to give staff and students as many options as possible in the worst-case scenario.

School safety initiatives are overseen by the Texas School Safety Center at Texas State University, and Abbott ordered the director of the center to contact every Texas school district and ensure its compliance. “Among other reviews, your team should begin conducting in-person, unannounced, random intruder detection audits on school districts,” Abbott wrote in a letter to the director of the school safety center. “Staff should approach campuses to find weak points and how quickly they can penetrate buildings without being stopped. This will help determine if schools are prepared to implement and follow the they have already submitted to the state.
