The race for the Republican nomination for governor in Mississippi will go to a runoff later this month, with the winner facing Democratic state Attorney General Jim Hood in the general election.
Reeves and Hood were both the frontrunners in their party’s primaries and regarded as likely contenders long before the 2019 Mississippi governor’s race really kicked off. The state’s Republican lean means Hood — long seen as Democrats’ best hope in the state — faces an uphill battle to win the governorship, regardless of which Republican wins the nomination. President Donald Trump won the state by nearly 20 percentage points, and Republicans control both chambers of the state legislature.
