a huge upgrade has just been confirmed by Google itself.
Compared to the Pixel 5 camera, the GN1 offers over four times as many pixels, as well as a larger surface area of 1/1.3 inches compared to the 1/2.55-inch sensor of the Pixel 5. This increases its ability to capture light, possibly the most important factor in determining image quality. Incidentally, the ISOCELL GN2 is larger still, at 1/1.2 inches, which is one possible reason why it might have been deemed unsuitable for the Pixel 6 housings.
The GN1 sensor also provides fast, dual-pixel autofocus that Samsung claims will enable images resolutions “comparable to 100 megapixels” through software. Additionally, it employs Samsung’s ‘Tetracell’ four-way pixel-binning technology that can further boost low-light performance by combining groups of four pixels into one.
Previous incarnations of the Pixel have demonstrated Google’s considerable strengths in using software to deliver high-quality pictures from seemingly mediocre imaging components. The Pixel 5 used camera hardware four generations behind the competition and still delivered great results. Now, we will hopefully get to see what the Pixel can do when finally fitted with high-end camera hardware.
