Drew Timme carried Gonzaga in the second half against UCLA. He needed hometown hero Julian Strawther to get him and the Zags to the Elite 8. “I felt like I was in a movie.” _Brian_Hamilton on Stawther's heroics.

For a couple weekends now, following Gonzaga has meant cataloging all the possible last-evers. Tracking the things Drew Timme does that, at some inevitable point, he’ll never do again in a Zags uniform. Timme, meanwhile, has caught sight of the finish just long enough to flip it off. He did it in Denver with 49 points across two games his team was not always assured of winning. He did it against UCLA, flame-broiling what was left of the Bruins’ frontcourt.

not suiting up at all. “Do our best,” UCLA coach Mick Cronin said, and it went about the way you’d expect that plan to go.Still, the math made sense for a while. Timme chewed up the defense with two points after two points while no one else did much of anything. And he knew what his team had gotten into, again. As Gonzaga left the floor to discuss another halftime deficit — at 13 points, a little more stark than usual — Timme lingered, dapping everyone up and offering words of encouragement.

It wound up being the night he climbed over everyone else who’s ever played in Spokane. Eye-to-eye with Morrison, probably, and then 36 and 13 and four against UCLA. A national championship game, a Sweet 16 and an Elite Eight in three possible tries. “He’s going to go down as one of the greatest college players in the modern era here when we’re finished,” Zags coach Mark Few had declared a day earlier.

That it wound up being Strawther was a bit of poetry. Two days earlier, the team’s plane touched down here and the junior guard’s first order of business was texting his barber in nearby Henderson for a clean-up. He spent the day before the Sweet 16 game with all the local television cameras fixed on him, running through the usual questions about how many tickets he mustered and so on. The vibe was good. Strawther was plainly and genuinely excited.

The initial thought was to put Strawther in position to get downhill and get to a floater. Then Strawther asked for clarification: If the defenders hung back and gave him space, could he just shoot it? Few looked at him incredulously. He couldn’t believe Strawther was even asking. The junior had, in fact, practiced that very shot all season. This was not a whim. So Few’s answer was yes. Shoot it. With a couple choice words attached.
