Goal tallies not just in finals but across the broader knock-out competition reflect the evolution of the game. That first one-goal final in 1872 was scarcely representative of the tournament’s early years. In the 1880s FA Cup matches yielded almost five goals on average. The mean tally stayed above three from the 1920s to the 1960s; in 45 games ten goals or more were scored.
