'I have to keep going, I can’t just stop'
Evie Meldrum was diagnosed with relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis at the age of 16, after falling ill.
“I remember reading something online about MS becoming progressive in something like seven to 10 years and thinking, well that means it will be a very quick decline and I’ll probably be in a wheelchair by the time I’m 30. I remember thinking I’d better make the most of my 20s! As her 30th birthday approaches, Evie is preparing to celebrate the milestone by jumping out of a plane as part of the MS Society’s The Big Leap skydive at Lancaster, England, on Friday, November 4.
She now writes – something she’s always enjoyed but never had enough time to do – and volunteers with Shift.ms, a social network founded by people with MS for people with MS. “I’m quite optimistic because I’m always trying to look for something else. I think, if I can’t do this, I’ll try something else. Like, to replace hiking and hillwalking, which I can’t really do so much anymore, I thought ‘what can I do to get that outdoorsy experience?’. So, I started looking into wild swimming. I’m always happy to try new things – I have to keep going, I can’t just stop.
