'Research has proven that girls at a very early age decide what they want to do.'

Dozens of Central Ohio girls are preparing to attend a first of its kind event, designed to introduce them to less-thought-about technology fields. The GirlCON event will offer hands-on robotic projects and gaming experiences, among other technology-based friendships and experiences.

Women in Tech leaders said they see 92% of nurses are women while only 20% of computer programmers are women. Organizers say they have talked with 7th through 10th-grade girls locally and they often hear from those girls that they are the only girl in a computer science course if they sign up for it. Allender said the time has come for women to stop feeling underrepresented in the computing world.Allender said many women working in tech within Columbus are coming together for GirlCON.
