After throwing a bullpen and running sprints this weekend, left-hander Alex Wood is nearing a rehab assignment.
SAN FRANCISCO — Some Giants’ injury updates Saturday their twilight start at Oracle Park against the Milwaukee Brewers:“He was actually out there running sprints today, so I feel good about him starting a rehab assignment,” Giants manager Gabe Kapler said. “I’m not quite sure what exact date is but it’s coming up.”
Wood last pitched on April 18, when he departed in the third inning of a road game against the Miami Marlins. Casey Schmitt, the Giants’ No. 4 ranked prospect by MLB.com, has played three games at second base of late for Triple-A Sacramento. Schmitt, 24 has played third base and shortstop and from Kapler has seen, the transition has been a smooth one to second base. “Everything I’ve seen on video suggests that he’s going to take to the position well,” Kapler said. “Casey is a very athletic defender, to play shortstop last year and in spring training looked pretty good. I feel the same is probably going to be true of second base, although it’s not going to be perfect.”
