Ghost bike memorials to honor two slain Houston bicyclists whose deaths remain unsolved
Houston police officers responded to the call around 7:50 p.m. in the 2200 block of West Dallas Street.
Witnesses told police that McKinney lost control of his bicycle and fell. The oncoming sedan — with out-of-state license plates — accelerated and ran him over while he was lying in the road. Other bicyclists participating in Pride Ride tried to help McKinney, but he was pronounced dead after being taken to a nearby hospital, according to police.McKinney's family set up ascheduled the placement for Sunday at 5:15 p.m. at The Eagle, an LGBTQ bar in Montrose at 611 Hyde Park Blvd.
"Hey BikeFam. It is with the greatest regret that I announce we lost one of our own tonight," wrote David Loredo, Pride Bike Ride Houston founder, in a Facebook post on Tuesday."We are heartbroken and shattered in a million pieces. There are no words to explain the amount of pain we are in right now."
In a separate Facebook post, Loredo asks attendees of the placement to wear white clothes and bring flowers, teddy bears, candles and other items to honor McKinney.
