Up until now, Manfred’s most well-known line was calling the World Series trophy just “a piece of metal” in an on-air interview with ESPN in February 2020. He received criticism for his handling of the Astros’ sign-stealing scandal — made public in the fall of 2019 — which is what prompted that interview.
It’s why it took nine years into Manfred’s tenure to see the sport’s pace of play tangibly change. You could argue, what took so long? That Manfred, who approved the pitch clock to be used in the Arizona Fall League in 2015, should have acted quicker to improve the sport and been undeterred by any potential backlash from the players association. Players will come around. Many already have.
