The ban came at the end of a debate about district rules on bathroom use and gender identity.

District procedures say students can access the bathroom that “corresponds to their gender identity consistently asserted at school.”

Although that procedure is still in place, a proposal had been made to the school board that would require segregated locker rooms and group restrooms based solely on “biology,” the Globe reports. Board member Noah Boudreault said he proposed new restrictions on bathroom use as part of a compromise. The Globe reports a majority of parents at a recent board meeting spoke out against segregating lockers rooms based on “biology,” saying it would be harmful to LGBTQ students.

“I see all these scared people on both sides not knowing what to do yet wanting to help their children in different ways,” said Nico Romeri, a 16-year-old transgender student, according to the Globe. “The best way you can help your children is not discriminating against their peers but listening and helping your child grow. That is all we want.”

Superintendent Christi Michaud tells the Globe she is worried about “bottlenecks” forming in restrooms and locker rooms because of the new policy since there are a limited amount of stalls. She said the district also is trying to determine if prohibiting use of urinals could violate codes that require one “water closet” per 30 students. If you purchase a product or register for an account through one of the links on our site, we may receive compensation.
