Win-and-you’re-in qualifier for the Breeders’ Cup Classic attracts 11 starters, the largest Pacific Classic field in a decade
Haskell Stakes winner Geaux Rocket Ride has been installed as the slight favorite for Saturday’s 33running of Del Mar’s premier annual race — the $1 millon, Grade I Pacific Classic, a 1 ¼-mile event on the main track for older horses.
The win-and-you’re-in qualifier for the Breeders’ Cup Classic has attracted 11 starters, which is the largest Pacific Classic field in a decade. Only five horses challenged Flightline in last year’s Pacific Classic, with the John Sadler-trained colt running away to a race-record 19 ¼-length victory. Flightline went on to win the Breeders’ Cup Classic before being retired.Mike Smith will be aboard Geaux Rocket Ride Saturday. The next two morning-line favorite in the Pacific Classic are the Bob Baffert-trained duo of Arabian Knight and Defunded .
Arabian Knight ran third in the July 22, Grade I Haskell behind Geaux Rocket Ride and Kentucky Derby winner Mage. Defunded ran a disappointing fourth in the Grade II San Diego Handicap at Del Mar on July 29 after winning the May 29 Grade I Gold Cup at Santa Anita.race at approximately 6:13 p.m. and will be the fourth of five stakes races Saturday. There are a total of nine stakes being contested over the Labor Day weekend.
Wide open race with the Peter Eurton-trained Exaulted a slight favorite over 4-1s Du Jour and Count Again at 4-1. Exaulted hasn’t raced since winning the Grade I Shoemaker Mile at Santa Anita on May 29. Baffert will have Prat aboard Du Jour, who won the Wickerr Stakes at Del Mar on July 23. D’Amato’s Count Again finished fourth in the Eddie Read in the 8-year-old gelding’s first start since winning the 2022 Shoemaker Mile.
