The Foreign Office has now told Britons in Gaza to follow Israel’s evacuation order as the deadline for civilians to leave loomed
Diplomats have been urging Cairo’s government to open the Rafah crossing from Gaza into Egypt since Hamas mounted terror attacks on Israeli civilians last weekend.
A FCDO spokesman said: “We have updated travel advice to recommend British nationals in Gaza follow Israel’s directive, if they are able to, but recognise this will be challenging for some people. Earlier, Mr Sunak said the UK was doing “everything we can to ensure the security of British citizens” after Defence Secretary Grant Shapps said it seemed “very likely” that there are British hostages in Gaza.
While in principle Tel Aviv would be happy for it to be open, they would not want to go against the Egyptian government and risk their shared security coordination in the region, an insider said.
