With Tony Soprano trending, here's the moment 'The Sopranos' gave up its HBO crown
Tony Soprano once said, "All due respect, you got no #@$ing idea what it's like to be number one... It's too much to deal with almost."
Well, everybody's favorite television mob boss can rest peacefully now because "The Sopranos" has given up its perch as the most popular show in HBO history. With the epic fantasy drama hurtling toward the conclusion of its fourth season, "Game of Thrones" has averaged 18.4 million viewers, according to Nielsen. "The Sopranos" peaked at 18.2 million per episode back in 2002.
There are plenty of asterisks as to how these statistics were gathered, of course. Viewers consumption of media has changed a lot since Tony was busy whacking Christopher and Paulie. DVRs are everywhere, and HBO now offers streaming of its shows on HBO Go. All those count. Then again, "Game of Thrones" is supposedly the most illegally downloaded show in America, so it's hard to know.
Tyrion Lannister and company aren't done yet. There are at least two more seasons in the offing, so the numbers will likely keep heading north. Last year's per-episode tally was about 4 million shy of where it is now. The biggest competition facing "Game of Thrones" for cable royalty is "The Walking Dead," which is neck and neck, viewer-wise.Maureen Dowd's long, strange trip to Colorado lights up Internet"The Colbert Report" is more informative than the real news
