In the middle of a rebuilding project, the Ducks need is a coach with a history of developing young players into winners.
Nobody should expect the Ducks to be back in the playoffs for the first time in six years next season or for the 2007 Stanley Cup winners to contend for a second title anytime soon.
Then again, it has been done. Since 2000, 10 teams have gone from having the NHL’s worst record to making the playoffs in a one-, two- or three-season surge, and four teams have gone from the cellar to the Stanley Cup in three, four or five years. One of the teams that made the playoffs one year after finishing last was the 2001-02 New York Islanders; Cronin was an assistant coach on that team.
