It was a pattern that held throughout Gabe’s entire pro career, and Barker witnessed it unfolding. “At first they would walk from the parking lot, just as normal runners would and talk and all of that,” he said. “But eventually, year after year, they started walking closer together, tilting their heads a little closer together. In the last few years, that’s what it always was. I’m usually first to the track, and so then I see them, and they’re always whispering to each other.

It was an arrangement that suited Gabe. After her second cancer, thyroid cancer in 2010, she had her strongest block of training in her life, roughly four years from 2011 to 2015. Her training wasn’t interrupted by surgery, chemotherapy, or radiation, and she set PRs of 4:01 for 1500 meters and 2:01 for 800 meters . Gabe wasn’t worried about her cancer returning, and Barker began to see her potential.
