EXCLUSIVE: Parole Board rejects application by deputy PM Dominic Raab for 'reconsideration' of initial release decision
'Coronation Street' rapist Andrew Barlow WILL be released from prison, with a relative of one of his many victims revealing she was told he could be freed as early as next month, it was revealed today. Barlow - now aged 66 and once Britain's most wanted man - was formerly known as Andrew Longmire and from Bolton.
As a result the team, on behalf of the Justice Secretary Dominic Raab, applied to the Parole Board to have the decision formerly reconsidered on January 17. That was supported by testimony and statements from victims and their families. His offences of rape, carried out between early 1980 and 1988, were mainly committed during the course of burglaries in the victims' own homes and Barlow used weapons to threaten them. The victims were often young mothers - raped while their children were in the house - but two were teenagers who were attacked in the street.
"I appealed against that decision and what they have said is that they have considered those appeals, but still believe he should be let out. We did our best to keep him behind bars but the Parole Board has now decided to release him. It is not what we wanted to hear. The ruling to reject the application, which was published today and made by Sir John Saunders, a retired High Court judge and member of the Parole Board, says: "I do not consider that the decision contained any error of law or was irrational and accordingly, the application for reconsideration is refused."
