More details are expected to be revealed on Tuesday about a discovery by English River First Nation, the latest First Nation to use ground\u002Dpenetrating radar to try to uncover the horrific legacy of residential schools.
English River First Nation Chief Jenny Wolverine said in a statement earlier this month that the first part of the search identified a dozen possible unmarked graves measuring about 75 centimetres in length, suggesting they could be the burial plots of infants. Following the discovery, English River elders and survivors sought privacy “to ensure that proper protocol and ceremony can be done to honour the lives of these babies and children,” Wolverine said.
The residential school near La la Plonge, a glacial lake in northern Saskatchewan, was operated by the Roman Catholic Church from 1906 to 1969 when it came under federal control.The Meadow Lake Tribal Council took full control of the school in 1985, and the residence was closed 10 years later.
The First Nation said National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation has what it described as “a vast number of records” about the school, including handwritten records in French that are being translated.
