“On our first morning of shooting after the initial downpour, I realised that I had all of these suitcases full of designer clothes, and nowhere to put them down without them sinking into the mud...”
was with Tim Walker in 1998. This was the Britpop era, so there was an incredible line-up: Blur, Primal Scream, Pulp… It was pure naivety, however, that made us believe we’d be able to take models Kirsty Hume and Trish Goff, their boyfriends Donovan Leitch and Aaron Ward, and Trish’s two-year-old son Nima, and capture them in and around the bacchanalia without any problem.
On this occasion, all of us stayed at a Travelodge down the road from the festival. The weather on Thursday was okay, but on Friday night, it started to pour – and continued on and off for the next four days. Honestly, it felt like Armageddon. It’s still known as one of the worst Glastonburys ever, weather-wise. The entire valley turned into a kind of swamp.
I had the girls wear leggings and Wellington boots into the festival, then dressed them properly in a tent as well as I could. There’s one picture of Trish leaning against a pole, holding Nima in her arms, and you can see that I had just pulled down her waterproof trousers. I had thought Tim was going to shoot her from the waist up!It’s funny – for ages, nobody suggested calling it a day, in spite of the terrible weather. Everyone just soldiered on.
Of course, it’s having to react to situations like that in the moment that make for the most magical pictures. That’s one of the joys of working with Tim; there’s always lots of spontaneity. In fact, when we were driving home from Glastonbury, we were outside Worthy Farm when someone spotted an empty – and relatively dry – field. The sun had come out at that point, and Tim jumped out and took some of the best images in the portfolio – including the one of Trish facedown in a tent.
