'The One With the Routine'—and an incredible backstory
for a quick dance number in season six, in 1999, their instructions were simple: “It was a dance that Monica and Ross were going to do…on New Year’s Rockin’ Eve,” she said during a recent phone interview. “They needed to be extremely silly…. Their description for me was silly, fun, trying way too hard, over the top, really dancing, just thinking that they’re the best ever.”
The end result is one of the NBC sitcom’s most memorable legacies: “the Routine,” a number Ross and Monica honed in middle school and resurrected in the season six installment “The One with the Routine” as a ploy to get the spotlight during a taping of Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve. The choreography itself defies description; it’s an unholy explosion of human movement, a combination of all the novelty dance moves of the time.
But the chaotic element that sells it is that none of these moves go together. Instead, Monica and Ross rocket through a visually painful montage of the era’s cheesiest dance moves. But Antin did say this forThey’re troopers. Also, for non-dancers, they picked it all up pretty quickly, even some of the tougher maneuvers, like the leapfrog. “Every single move I showed them, they were able to do it,” Antin said. “I swear to God.
