From Regina to France and back again, award-winning singer Kyrie Kristmanson returned home last weekend for the release of her new album.
When live music resumed, Kristmanson focused on smaller acoustic shows to create a more “intimate” experience.
“It was a really homemade operation; I would fold the CD covers myself and that kind of thing,” says Kristmanson, who was only 14 when she began writing songs with schoolmate Marshall Burns. They eventually joined forces with Erin Passmore to form the indie-rock band Rah Rah. She took gigs in Ottawa, Toronto and Montreal in addition to playing trumpet for Melissa Laveaux, who signed with a record label in France and invited Kristmanson to join her on tour. That trip spawned an encounter with another French singer, Emily Loizeau, who asked her to serve as the opening act on an upcoming tour.
That experience “definitely influenced my musical language” and led to a sound she calls “cosmic folk.”
