Link light rail construction project delays push back opening timelinesThe opening timelines for several Link light rail projects will be pushed back due to construction issues, pandemic challenges and the concrete strike. On Thursday, the Sound Transit Board System Expansion Committee received a detailed briefing to identify new opening dates for the East Link, Lynnwood, Federal Way and downtown Redmond Link extensions. According to a release from Sound Transit, the Lynnwood and Redmond projects could be delayed by up to six months due to a strike that held up concrete delivery. The targeted completion was originally scheduled for mid-2024. A ground instability issue is impacting the Federal Way extension. A segment in Kent, next to Interstate 5 and South 259th Place, could potentially require a redesign. The stability issue involves a slope that recently experienced a localized failure, in which 200 feet of embankment slid down by about 9 feet. That required a three-day precautionary lane closure on southbound I-5. While the slope has been temporarily stabilized, a permanent design fix is in the works. Officials said they're expecting the completion date to extend a number of months into 2025 instead of late 2024. Construction challenges are also affecting the East Link extension, which could delay the project by at least a year beyond its scheduled opening in mid-2023. Officials said the biggest issue on the East Link involves the quality and durability of plinths, or raised concrete structures, which support the tracks in key areas of the alignment. On both the east and west sides of the I-90 floating bridge, crews are working to fix issues with cast-in-place concrete plinths, which have led to the recognition of other problems. “Within about the next four years, our carbon- and congestion-free light rail system will more than double from 26 to 62 miles and from 25 to 50 stations,” said Sound Transit Interim CEO Brooke Belman. “While we are on a path to fully resolve impacts of COVID-19, the concrete delivery strike and our constru
