‘Free Guy’ review
, and most of us will happily champion the likes oftakes its cues from those explicitly video game-inspired films, offering an original adventure comedy partially set within an open world-type game. It uses the tropes and clichés of modern online video gaming for the sake of a mostly winning and often inspired old-school fantasy..
As we learn pretty quickly, Molotov Girl is the in-game alter-ego of Millie , who is playing the game in hopes of finding evidence thatis indeed being run on a build that she and her former partner Keys built. If so, then that build can be proven to have been stolen by Keery’s current boss . That plot plays out in surprising ways, while Keys and Mille’s backstory may remind you of that much-acclaimed flashback episode in the first season of Apple’s. Yes, I mean that as a compliment.
This is a self-satirical ode to online multiplier gaming without framing those who play the games as anything other than normal. The film offers players of all walks of life who relish the time spent in these online fantasy worlds. It’s not a sandbox in which I have spent much time, but I appreciated a modern film that didn’t offer up a newer form of entertainment as “weird,” “scary” or only refuge for outcasts.
The production values are all top-notch. I will be petty and note that this over/under $115 million flick partially set in a video game looks and feels more real than that other recent $200 million Disney flick set in the real world. There is an amusing contrast in terms of the bright and shiny video game landscape and the non-stop background violence.
