As stores try to turn the page on the pandemic, the postponed 2021 Free Comic Book Day looks to bring back cooped-up fans and open door to new ones.
Black superheroes are popular onscreen thanks to the work of Black creators of comic book characters and stories that anticipated this racial reckoning moment., a well-known comics shop in Hollywood. To help protect its customers, the majority of its books will be available outside in the parking lot rather than inside the store. And the shop is partnering with other businesses to spread out the books with its neighbors, and maybe spread some of the financial love around as well.
During the shut down, and for much of the last year, Legacy had to shift its business model, putting more emphasis into online sales“Initially it was tough during the pandemic. It’s like you post more stuff online, more stuff online sells,” says Olin Tellefsen, comics manager at Legacy Comics. “One of our challenges was finding places to put our things as business expanded.”
“During the pandemic, people were isolated,” Tellefsen says. “They got back into their hobbies, which include comic books and trading cards.”Free Comic Book Day hopes to encourage and build on that momentum. There is often a noticeable retention of new customers, even if it’s only for a few months. Publishers see this and have stepped up by offering new stories as well.
