French leader Emmanuel Macron is rolling out the red carpet for the U.K.’s Rishi Sunak, as the countries look to present a united front against Russia

Mr. Macron needs fresh allies in Europe, as tensions with Germany rise on issues including energy policy and Germany’s at times hesitant support for the, said Charles Grant, the director of the Centre for European Reform, a think tank. “Macron needs to diversify, he needs a few new friends in Europe,” Mr. Grant said. Both Mr. Macron and Mr. Sunak are relatively young, and both are former bankers.

A feud between the two countries over the right to fish waters close to Britain nearly spun out of control, with the U.K. sending gunboats to the nearby island of Jersey, fearing a rebellion by French fishermen. “We are in a context that allows us to restart things, that gives us a new impetus,” another French official said.
