Part of its name sounds Dutch, but Quatuor Van Kuijk is decidedly French. So French, in fact, that this string quartet’s members at first mispronounced their own moniker.
Then the pandemic happened. Kondo auditioned in March 2020 and started playing with the group in June. Things opened up for a few months and they performed a few concerts before the lockdown resumed. “I’ve known of them since 2014, when they won 2015 Wigmore Hall International String Quartet Competition. I was sitting in the audience and thought: ‘'Wow.’ Working with them now is a funny turn of events.”
“It felt good to be going deep. It was great during recording. We were absorbed, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. with this music. It’s our baby. It’s special,” Kondo said.
