Democrats Debbie Podgorski and Ferdinand Alvarez are each hoping for a second term as at-large City Council members. Hoping to oust them are Republicans Brent Wright and Melissa Weidenbach.
Portage has only four officeholders elected by the entire city — mayor, clerk-treasurer and the two at-large council members. Podgorski is council president this year. She also chairs the traffic commission. Alvarez, who has a master’s in public administration, works with law enforcement as a deputy prosecutor based in Portage, he said. “I climbed up my political ladder pretty fast,” Weidenbach said. She got involved in Portage politics in 2020.
“We are super grant-dependent on the state,” she said. Mayor Sue Lynch routinely remarks on how helpful state and federal grants have been in helping the city meet its needs. Alvarez said it’s incumbent on the council to make sure the city has enough money to pay the bills. “Now we’ve got to really put our thinking caps on” after the federal American Rescue Plan Act funds are already spent. He also wants to ensure Portage grows responsibly and resources aren’t stretched accordingly.
