Demerzel has plenty more story left.
Summary The Foundation season 2 finale has finally confirmed what became increasingly evident all along: not only is Demerzel the power behind the Cleonic Dynasty's throne, but she is the true heir to Empire. A series of flashbacks revealed that the original Cleon I fell in love with her while she was imprisoned by his father, eventually foregoing his own marriage to make her his queen — and choosing to clone himself in perpetuity so that his successors could be considered their children.
David S. Goyer: A lot of the big moves of Demerzel were mapped out by me from the beginning. I knew in season 1 that we were going to tell that story near the end of season 2. When she ripped her face off at the end of season 1, a lot of people, assumed it was because of the cognitive dissonance that she was experiencing for killing Dawn. And that was certainly the case, but now you understand there's a lot more to it than that.
Demerzel is a really complex character. And if the show goes on, we have not told all of her story. There's at least two or three more pretty big flashbacks that we intend to show that will go progressively further and further back in time. If the show goes on long enough, we'll go all the way back to Earth 18,000 years ago.
