An artist has accused Epic Games of stealing their work for the popular Fortnite: Battle Royale game.
There's no doubt that the art from Ramirez, which appears to have been posted to DeviantArt prior to the release of Taro, looks an awful lot like Epic's new skin., 'Elecast' posted this design on September 3rd, 2018. The Taro and Nara skins first appeared on November 24th, over two months later. Others have pointed to even earlier designs posted by this artist.“We take these claims seriously and are in the process of investigating them.
At this point, it's hard to know what happened. Could this be just random chance? Could both characters be modeled after something else and the similarity is merely coincidental? Or did an artist at Epic try to pass this off as their own design, thinking the original artist wouldn't notice? We've seen a number of people sue Epic Games over dance moves, but dance moves are not copyrightable which makes these cases frivolous at best. A piece of artwork, on the other hand, is another matter entirely. Hopefully Epic will figure out exactly what happened and everyone can resolve this in a reasonable manner.
