Fort Worth schools trustees want Gov. Greg Abbott to call a special legislative session focused on the prevention of mass shootings and gun violence. The...

Abbott has tasked Texas lawmakers with examining firearms safety and school security after the Uvalde tragedy.

“Our schools must be a safe refuge for our children and the adults charged with their care,” the resolution reads. Trustee Wallace Bridges said children need to know that “we value them, that we think their lives are important.” He said he left his pistol at home that day because he was working at a nearby school district and also had planned to visit Fort Hood. Ryan said he supports arming teachers who wish to do so.“Do I know that I could have made a difference? I have no idea,” Ryan said. “Could the guy have shot me? Absolutely could have. But I would have tried to do something.”Some Texans want police in every school post-Uvalde.

Other speakers stressed that the best way to protect schools from mass shootings is to end gun-free zones.Mindia Whittier, a parent of two FWISD students, commended the board, saying “if the Uvalde tragedy taught us anything, it’s that every single day Fort Worth ISD could become the epicenter of the next mass shooting massacre. Every single day we could be next.”

Gov. Greg Abbott, who is up for reelection in November, is the only official in Texas who can reconvene lawmakers for a special session.
