Abdullahi Ahmed Abdullahi pleaded guilty last year to providing material support to terrorists, and a conspiracy charge for the same crime
In January 2014, just a few months before the Islamic State declared a worldwide caliphate, a Canadian man who had previously lived in San Diego robbed an Edmonton jeweler, hoping to turn the loot into money he could send to the six young men, including four of his cousins, who he’d helped send to fight for the militant Islamist group.
The relatives said much of his time in San Diego, in his 20s, was spent caring for elderly family members or younger cousins. Two cousins wrote that they worked with him at a San Diego farmer’s market, selling East African food from their family’s restaurant.Just before that year began, in November 2013, three of Abdullahi’s cousins traveled from Edmonton to Turkey, then to Syria to join the Islamic State, according to his plea agreement.
At the time, in late 2013, the Islamic State was still a relatively unknown group to many westerners. But as the war in Syria raged between al-Assad’s regime and numerous rebel groups, the Islamic State steadily grew and expanded its influence. By January 2014, the same month Abdullahi held up the jewelry store, the Islamic State had taken control of large swaths of Syria, declaring the northeastern city of Raqqa its capital.
Carlos, the attorney, said Abdullahi’s cousins were “young and impressionable, and they decided to do what they were going to do. And they enlisted the help of Mr. Abdullahi, who assisted them by providing funds for their travel.”
