An important man died in San Antonio this week. He was a wealthy man who never made more than $27,000 a year.

Ramon Vasquez Y Sanchez performs a native American blessing Wednesday morning, July 12, 2017 in front of one of the Four Seasons murals during a dedication ceremony for the murals on Villamain below Loop 410 on San Antonio's south side.

His son Ramón Vásquez, another in a line of Native American activists in San Antonio, offered some idea.He needed a sip of water and found two fountains side by side. He took a drink and got yelled at for using the wrong one, the one for white people.Vásquez y Sánchez went home, perhaps seeking words of comfort. Instead, his mother said, “What did you do about it?”

He helped preserve old civil documents and mission records so that the contributions of Native Americans and Mexican Americans would be made obvious. As his body was being taken away to be cremated, they sang native songs accompanied by drummers. The first was about the conclusion of his life on earth, the second about the journey ahead of him.

The family was among the first to move into “the courts,” the historic public housing unit named Alazán Apache. He led San Antonian Mario Compean’s campaign for governor and served as statewide vice chairman of the party, his son said.
