Joe Hassett, a former NBA player, is now a senior vice president at Janney Montgomery Scott and a longtime radio broadcaster for the Providence College men's basketball team.

Providence head coach Ed Cooley reacts during the second half of an NCAA college basketball game against Marquette in Providence, R.I., Saturday, Feb. 23, 2019. Five years ago this month, Joe Hassett was in Omaha, Neb., preparing to work as Providence College’s radio analyst for that night’s Big East men’s basketball game against Creighton University. Suddenly, he became awestruck, which doesn’t happen too often.

“I put it right in front of him on the table and I said, ‘Warren, you can’t buy this. You have to win this,’” Hassett said. “He went bananas. He thought that was awesome. He says, ‘Sit down. I want you to have something to eat with me.’” “He’s a legend in Providence College basketball lore,” said Tennessee coach Rick Barnes, who has been friends with Hassett since Barnes coached at Providence from 1988 to 1994. “Everybody knows Joe Hassett.”

Hassett remembers a game in the early 1980’s when the Warriors were down by three points with a few minutes remaining. He pulled up for a three and made the shot to tie it up. But Golden State coach Al Attles wasn’t happy. These days, situations like that are common in the NBA, which pleases Hassett. It also makes him a bit wistful.

At the same time, Hassett has remained involved in basketball through broadcasting. He started calling Providence games in 1985 after being approached by then-athletic director Lou Lamoriello, who went on to become general manager of the New Jersey Devils, Toronto Maple Leafs and New York Islanders. Hassett hadn’t considered working in the radio field, but he’s grown to enjoy it.

Through the decades, Hassett has become close with numerous Providence players and coaches, many of whom turn to him for advice. When Barnes was hired at Providence in April 1988, he was only 33 years old and had spent almost his entire life in the South. He remembers Hassett showing him around Rhode Island and helping him adjust. Barnes also routinely asked Hassett for feedback on the team’s performance.
