Former Harris County judge Shearn Smith, who was known among lawyers as “Stern Shearn” and recognized for his melodic performance of the national anthem at University of Houston games, died Tuesday. He was 95.
That's how he gained his nickname of “Stern Shearn.” He would call out lawyers who were unprepared and didn't tolerate any nonsense in his courtroom. “It was a good place to try a case,” Mithoff said. “He was mindful of those who appeared in front of him, the lawyers and their clients, and he was mindful of the time that we were taking out of the lives of the jurors who were serving.”
