President Joe Biden announced Monday that former Democratic National Committee chairman Tom Perez would join the administration as a senior White House adviser.
Perez, who also served as secretary of labor from 2013-2017, departed the DNC in 2021 and will replace Julie Chavez Rodriguez as the White House director of intergovernmental affairs.Rodriguez recently left her post to run Biden's 2024 reelection campaign.
"Tom will build on the tremendous work of Julie Chavez Rodriguez. He brings decades of experience to my team, having served in local, state and federal government," Biden wrote in a statement announcing the staffing decision.
Perez said in an interview with the Associated Press that in his new role, he will focus on implementing the infrastructure and tech upgrades included in a number of the president's high-priority spending packages. "The success is very dependent on the capacity of federal, state and local authorities and business leaders and nonprofit leaders to come together to maximize the moment," he said.
