Mark Bennett intentionally touched the 24-year-old woman’s chest with the back of his hand and sent her several sexually charged messages, including asking for nude photos, according to a complaint filed last week by the Ohio Disciplinary Counsel.
CLEVELAND, Ohio— A former assistant U.S. attorney who worked in Cleveland and Akron is accused of sexually harassing an intern.
The complaint was filed with the Ohio Board of Professional Conduct. The Ohio Supreme Court ultimately makes any decision on attorney discipline. During his time in the office, Bennett mostly handled mortgage fraud cases during the height of the U.S. housing crisis. In 2015, he was honored by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s Inspector General for several of those cases. He also prosecuted healthcare fraud and Ponzi schemes.Bennett harassed the woman from 2017 through 2019, when she worked as an intern in the U.S. attorney’s office, according to the complaint.
In an incident in August or September 2017, the two were alone in the library of the U.S. attorney’s office in Akron. Bennett asked for a copy of the 2015 federal sentencing guidelines, reached across her body and touched the woman’s breasts with the back of his hand. He held his hand there while making and holding eye contact with the woman, according to the complaint. He removed his hand when another attorney walked in the room.
The woman left the office, but she decided to return in 2018. She reached out to Bennett to inquire whom she could ask about returning. Bennett asked what she’d be willing to do to get back into the office, leading her to believe his response had sexual overtones, according to the complaint. The woman hid from Bennett whenever she had to work in the Akron office. He continued messaging her into 2019, including commenting on her appearance and sending her a Facebook message at 4 a.m. that said: “Why do you haunt my dreams?”
